How to journal on New Year's. Prompts to help you reflect on the passing year.

The end of the year can be so hectic and emotional. Usually, I feel like I am actually mourning the passing year - all these emotions are coming up, unfulfilled hopes and resolutions, and a unified feeling of an end of some sort. But at the same time, there is a feeling of celebration and hope - looking forwards to uniting together when the clock strikes midnight and promptly letting go of a year that has served its purpose and making a commitment to do better next one around!

Everyone can attach their own meaning to this event - you can be making resolutions or not because we know that we don't need to wait for a year to change to promise ourselves to start something, but it is kinda symbolic if we do, or you can be just done with the 2022 and ready to forget it and move on.

Even so, this is such a potent time to make a change, reflect and learn - using this time as a great catalyst to dive deeper into yourself and create a meaningful change from within.

Mind is a tricky thing it sometimes tends to zoom in on the negatives and stay there in self-pity and wallow, so it is helpful to take a look at the big picture, to reaffirm that there is always, always light, joy, and love.

I find it to be so very important for me to fully sit down and reflect on a passing year, to be grateful for all the growth and lessons it kindly offered, wherever I chose to see them as such is a different question.

I did this journaling prompt technique last year and had such joy reading them back now, so I wanted to share it, maybe this will help you to truly leave the year behind and take the important lessons to the next one!

So find your notepad, colourful pens. Put on Spotify your top songs of 2022, and let's write!

  1. Memories, moments This is pretty straightforward - check your phone photos chronologically and mentally take yourself back to each month. Now write down the most memorable moments!

  2. Accomplishments I am proud of Now it is time to honour all that you have done in a year, and if you feel like there's not much there, I employ you to look again - sometimes what others would take for granted might be a huge accomplishment for you, be proud of it, you don't have to measure your personal success by anyone else's measure, even when all the social media experience might feel like that. Come back to yourself!

  3. People and communities who helped People are social creatures, and we would be throwing stones in our path by choosing to walk it alone! So take a minute to write down everyone who brought you joy, inspired, supported, and cherished you! They might be even inspiring people on the internet whose words brought you newfound wisdom and curiosity! By affirming and being grateful for what we have we invite more of those experiences and people into our lives!

  4. Happiness What, who, and how brought you happy moments? Was it your cat, that beautiful sunset on summer's solstice, that one dining experience or pizza in Italy? Write down all that pops into your mind.

  5. Difficult moments It ain't always easy and if it would be, this would not bring us any depth or wisdom, so look back and appreciate the difficult moments, may it be a broken laptop screen or war. Note these difficulties, when they are in front of you they might not feel so catastrophic, and you might note how they also helped you to grow as a person.

  6. Lessons Now write down all the lessons you have learned during the passing year. What wisdom have you acquired through hardships and joy? Again, they don't need to all be big and profound lessons - maybe the lesson for you was to always take your Swiss army knife with you when leaving home because you don't know what tool might come in handy. Really, just any small thing can be a beautiful lesson to appreciate!

  7. Personal transformations Take a deep breath, and let it out. Yes, you have transformed during the year, and that is fantastic! Look into a mirror, but don't pay much attention to physical appearance, look deeper. What transformations are lying behind those eyes? Maybe you have learned to deal with pain better, or have cultivated a kinder, more loving mindset toward yourself. Whatever it might be - allow it to be written down on paper.

  8. What worked and didn't work Separate in two columns - Worked & Didn't work. Now think of what managed to come to fruition during the year and what hasn't yet. Don't judge yourself too harshly, look at the list objectively with trust and openness. It might be that some things are not meant to happen, the timing has not been right, or other obstacles were in the way. Forgive and let go.

  9. Resolutions What were your resolutions for that year? Reflect on how you have or not have kept true to them.

  10. Words for 2022! Some keywords for the passing year! I'll share mine: Abundance Ceremony Courage Community Communication Gratitude Plant-Based Mega Trip Women Magic Freedom Ukraine Iran Energy Merlin & Witches

Would love to know how you did, what was the most challenging part, what would you edit or add to these prompts, and what was unclear or too clear? How do you feel about the start of the New Year? What intentions do you take with you into 2023?

Abundant New Year to you all, have a beautiful one! ♡
